Chicken and Vegetable Backpacking Ramen

Adapted from Completely Delicious backpacking ramen, using canned chicken and vegetables.

Chicken and vegetable ramen

Serves six • Cook three small batches of two servings on the WhisperLite

Ingredient Per patrol of six
Ramen packets, standard 3 oz 6 packets
Canned chicken, drained 1½ cans of approximately 12.5 oz each
Canned mixed vegetables, drained 1½ cans of approximately 15 oz each
Dried mushrooms, chopped ½ oz
Potable water 12 cups
Soy sauce 1½ tbsp
Sesame oil 1½ tsp
Ramen seasoning Add gradually to taste
Crispy fried onions ¾ cup
Sriracha Start with 1½–3 tsp; offer individually
Oranges and cookies for serving 6 oranges and 12 oz cookies

Open all three cans of chicken and all three cans of vegetables at lunchtime. Drain and divide each ingredient equally between the two patrols. Keep cans unopened until cooking. Shelf-stable pouches may replace chicken cans; match the amount of drained meat.

Directions

1. Read and follow the WhisperLite checklist on the next page. Use a compatible pot, approximately 2 liters, with adequate headroom.

2. For each two-person batch use 2 ramen packets, 4 cups water, one-third of the patrol’s chicken, vegetables, mushrooms, sauces, and toppings.

3. Bring water to a boil. Add mushrooms and simmer about 5 minutes.

4. Add noodles and cook according to package directions. Stir in chicken and vegetables; return to a simmer and heat thoroughly.

5. Remove from heat. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and ramen seasoning to taste. Serve two Scouts, then repeat for the remaining batches.

6. Top with fried onions and let each person add sriracha. Serve oranges and cookies. Shut down and cool the stove.

Use all opened chicken and vegetables during lunch. This lunch requires no cooler before opening. Allow roughly 35–50 minutes for three batches, depending on stove performance.

Equipment: WhisperLite fuel system, compatible pot and lid, lighter, can opener, measuring cup, stirring spoon, bowls, and utensils.

WhisperLite operation

For the standard white-gas WhisperLite only, operated by a trained adult. Other WhisperLite models require their own manuals. Read the complete MSR manual before use; this checklist is a reminder, not a substitute.

1. Outdoors on level ground: keep combustibles 4 feet away, spare fuel 25 feet away, and children at least 10 feet away.

2. Inspect seals and check for leaks. Fill an MSR bottle only to its line with white gas; install pump, close valve, and pump 20–30 strokes.

3. Unfold legs on reflector. Lubricate and insert fuel-line end; secure catch. Position bottle sideways, valve up, away from burner.

4. Prime: open valve 1½ turns, release only ½ spoonful into cup, then close. Light cup, keeping body clear.

5. When priming flame diminishes, open valve ½ turn; establish blue flame, then adjust. If extinguished, close valve and cool five minutes before restarting.

6. Fit windscreen with a 1-inch pot gap; never enclose bottle. Cookware maximum: 10-inch diameter, 6-inch height, 10-pound loaded weight.

7. Close valve; let residual flame extinguish. Cool five minutes before disconnecting. Depressurize upright, away from face and ignition. Never refuel hot.

Lunch cooking plan

Each patrol serves two people at a time in three batches. Prepare bowls and toppings before lighting. Open and divide the canned ingredients at lunch, then measure three equal sets for each patrol. Keep the stove cooking area clear.
